At first I didn't understand why I had to do volunteer service for massage therapy. But after Jamie got me into a local womens shelter i understood. i have never done anything so rewarding. if you ask me, community service should be a part of everyone's life.

Good Job, Valerie! Community service should play a part in all of our lives. Besides helping out the community and giving us a much needed self-esteem boost, it has several side benefits. At the very least, it provides a foundation for networking among others with common interests, and it can provide insight into a possible business or non-profit venture to help solve the needs in your local community.

I received my list of community service groups that has been used by Community Care College about 1 hour after talking to my sister who wanted to know if I wanted to help the blue star mothers. My 18 year old nephew just left for the Army on June 17th. So I was excited to learn I could help a worthwhile cause and do some of my community service at the same time and feel like I am doing something for the service men as well. Thanks for the listing as a suggestion. It is a great way to get started in my community service work.

You're RIGHT Sarah! That is really what the volunteer service hours are all about - helping a worthwile cause. More than that, it's really looking outside yourself! I'm glad that you had a good experience and shared it with us!

What i love about Community Care College is that they want you to succeed and help the community. I have 11 weeks unit i go out on externship, I did my community service and I did my associates here as well and got nothing but good attitude and help from everyone. They do the best they can and help the most they can and if they can not they find the person that would help the best. I think it is Great how they make you give back to the community it makes you have responsibility and yet makes you see the truth of a lot of things that has happened to good people. One of my favorite things to do is find a small nursing home go in and just set and talk to the elderly listen to their Stories. I do that once a month now because Community Care College's community Service made me see you do not get where you are going in life by setting back and watching, get out and see what other people have done for you and what better way then the older man setting at that home you pass by every morning that fought WWII for you that wants to share his story with someone that will listen and smile. You will be shocked what people went through to give you the freedom you have today, so 30 hours of just listing is nothing to the stories he has told.
go out and make a friend,
Sara

Here is the con on on volunteer service. It took a bit to find someplace that even needed a volunteer on Fridays. Most places said they already had one during the times I could come so they didn't need me. Once I did find a place it wasn't what I was looking for. Its not something where I feel like I am really helping people in need. There is no satisfaction from doing a good deed. Don't get me wrong, the people that I work for are great. I help in a Goodwill Store. All I do is stock shelves all day and the majority of the people shopping there are not ones who can't afford to go somewhere else. I come home after 4 hours of hard, long work. I was told to dress professionally when the people who work there wear jeans and tennis shoes. My feet hurt and my good clothes get messed up from hauling large objects around. Its a good idea to have the volunteer service but 30 hours is a bit much. On top of kids, home, work, and school, spending another 4 hours every Friday on this is too much. Especially when it is not a project that I am enjoying.

I had never been required to do Volunteer service before....seemed like a punishment. "Commuinty Service is related to jail right? Then I did a few hours here and there. WOW was I WRONG !!!! Not only has volunteering instilled new and enhanced traits in myself, I really can atest to seeing the difference in a simple smile bestowed on one in need. I am not above or below any other human, I am simply at a present point to give a bit..freely..of my time. No "promises to repay", no cash given, and no moral wrong thinkings. SIMPLE TIME.....
I have done over my required 30 hours at various places, never would I have thought VOLUNTEERING would change me. I am becoming a PROFESSIONAL by my actions and reactions to the people around me. Because someone cared, and continues to lift ME up, I can "pay it forward" and lift others up too.
I became a VOLUNTEER as a I became a PROFESSIONAL.
In closing, I cannot stress enough the need to do continual volunteer services. It is a way to really see, hear, and touch the world we live in and have the opportunity to aide in CHANGING the wrongs we are all quilty of.
May I realize the person behind me is simply looking for me to stop and lift them up too...as we work to live a better life by being realistic better and obtainable people. PAY IT FORWARD...it really does work !~!!!!

Dear Unknown,
Community service should not be viewed in the same manner as you are seeing it. Think of it more as an enlightening experience and look to the qualities of the organization in which you work. I know for a fact that the Goodwill stores hold 1 or 2 days a month where they allow genuine low- income ladies taking further education courses (i.e. GED) to come in and pick out 1 to 2 complete outfits for job/career interviews. These are the things you should be thinking about when going to your job. And don't stress about your clothes being messed up- wear flats and don't wear anything you can't throw in the washer when you get home! Community service is one of the few reasons why CCC is such an outstanding educational center recognized for their help in the community. I did my community service with 6 kids, a full-time job, church, home and a husband to boot. Stic in there you can do it!
